Junky Road.map

Last updated on 8/18/2001 by agent00013

The Junky Road.map defines the goals for the JavaJunkies website in the near and distant futures. Following is these goals and comments on them. The goals are in sequential order as best as possible. Some goals require later goals to be fully functional.

Goal Number #1: Define the sections for JavaJunkies, their goals, and changes needed to finalize them.

The Grinder: Section is complete aside from bug checking and aesthetic changes.
-section goal: Facilitate a place for users to ask questions and receive answers to Java coding problems and similar issues.

Coffee Talk: Section complete aside from bug checking and aesthetic changes.
-section goal: Faciliate a place of discussion for topics related to Java, Open Source, and the overall internet community.
-changes: Maybe still gets a new name?

Library O' Java: A section for Java documentation and Tutorials created by Java Junkie members and maintained by the documentation group.
-section goal: Provide useful information to users in an organized and intuitive manner.

Code Library: Section for members to post snippets of Java Code that they have written. This will probably link up to and/or extend gregor42's CJAN initiative.

Material Reviews: A section including Java-oriented book and software reviews written by anyone, but moderated by authorized users and posted when "endorsed."
-section goal: Give users a definitive resource for finding Java materials that may be helpful for all phases of JavaJunky "awareness."
-changes: need to find and set up a group of "Review Moderators" and also need to finish designing the section.

Java News: A section with Java news.
-section goal: Provide users with news that affects the Java community. This is for more "official" news then the types of news and articles that would be pointed out for discussion in the Coffee Talk section.
-changes: define a system for determining what types of news goes here.

Other Sections: anything we haven't thought of yet. We'll take suggestions so long as they aren't ridiculous.

Goal #2: Experience and Voting System

Experience: Determine how voting affects experience, user levels, $NORM values, etc.

Voting: +/- voting will exist. There will also be an option for "null" voting. This spends one of your votes, but allows you to see the reputation of a node without affecting its experience. Primarily, the purpose of such a feature is for curious people. People curious to see what a node's reputation is, but don't think it's worthy of a vote.

Best/Worst/Cool Nodes: Best and worst nodes would be based on node reputation alone. "Cool" nodes would be another voting option that would spend a number of votes (five, for example) and can only be used once per day per user above a certain level (to be determined).

Goal #3:: Moderation System

Determine what users have what priveledges and how to implement the system.

Goal #4:: Chatterbox Clients

Info: Right now there's no alternative but to use the standard CB nodelet that are fully functional.
Goal: Give users the ability to access the CB through alternative means.
How: Create "framechat"-like clients, a java applet, and potentially a standalone java application capable of integrating with the CB in order to post new messages and to send and receive private messages. More features can be added later. Basic functionality is the first priority.
Note: thabenksta is working on modifying the Java Chatterbox to function with the site.
