We have a winner! Chris's suggestion won the popular and electoral college votes. We will make this change as we get around to it. For those of you that are too lazy to look up a couple of nodes here is the new Java Junkies Experience Level List.

The titles are in and have been updated.
Look at your own node to see your shiny new title!

     no it's not.
This is the final list (I know you know this)
     1. Initiate
     2. Novice
     3. Apprentice
     4. Page (as opposed to a Scribe)
     5. Java Junky
     6. Student
     7. Scribe (you can switch Scribe and Student around if you like)
     8. Scholar
     9. Bean
    10. Commodity (i thought it was better than Guru, Sage perhaps?)

I really really really really really dislike mentor and guru because they are such bullsh** terms.

I've told this to thabenksta privately. At one point, he said to me "I dont think anyone is going to strive to be a commodity", well I don't want to be a mentor(i am my own protoge) or a "guru".

Well I personally don't like student, scholar, bean or commodity. In fact I like the list I posted the best. But whatever, I just tried to do it the simple fair way, but if you want to hand pick the list yourself, do what you have to do.

Commodity? i liked 'Oracle' better.. just my $0.02
 [reply]

Well you wouldn't be striving to a mentor or guru, you'd be striving to become an oracle, which I would think would be a more respectable goal than becoming a bean or commodity ;-)

They are just names for levels though, it's not exactly an integral part of the site, and hardly worth getting all worked up about :)

If you guys want to change them it's fine with me, although I did spend nearly an entire minute of my life coming up with them...

Re: Experience Levels... (Junkiie/i, not Junkiy/i)
by ybiC on Fri Sep 21 2001 at 18:21

I think the spelling we want is "j-u-n-k-i-e".

    from Merriam-Webster:

    • junkie   "a person who derives inordinate pleasure from or who is dependent on something"
    • junky   adjective describing something as "secondhand, worn, or discarded"

I'm paraphrasing just a bit, but look for yourselves to see what I mean.
      cheers,
      Don

The word comes from William S. Burrough's book Junky. Although it was originally published under the name "Junkie" and pen name William Lee, either spelling could be considered correct. I prefer "junky".

I know I'm late, but I thought I'd post my ideas anyway.

In keeping with the "Junkie" theme, I had some ideas for new level titles:

    Level 1: Dabbler
    Level 2: (Ab)User
    Level 3: Vassal
    Level 4: Fanatic
    Level 5: Junkie
    Level 6: Addict
    Level 7: Obsessor
    Level 8: Devotee
    Level 9: Worshiper
    Level 10: Zealot

It's similar to the "Monk" theme in the PerlMonks level titles, only these titles show a transition from "infrequent use" --> "chronic abuse" --> "dependency" --> "devotion."
